    When brake fluid replacement is necessary:

    1. discoloration and thickening of the consumable;

    2. reduced braking efficiency;

    3. visible contamination in the expansion tank;

    4. detecting leaks in the brake system;

    5. every 40,000 km for regular cars or 20,000 km for sports cars.

    Steps in changing the brake fluid

    Steps in changing the brake fluid

    1 Checking the brake fluid level and condition

    2 Installing the vehicle on the lift

    3 Wheel removal (if necessary)

    4 Connecting the brake pump

    5 Unscrewing the fitting on each caliper in turn

    6 Draining the old brake fluid

    7 Filling the reservoir with new brake fluid

    8 Pumping the system until the fluid is clear and free of air

    9 Screwing in the fittings

    10 Checking the system for leaks

    11 Top up to the desired level

    12 Installation of wheels (if removed)

    Changing the brake fluid

    With brake pads and discs, most drivers have a relatively straightforward situation – you can visually see how and when they wear out. As a result, there comes a time when they need to be replaced, because our safety depends on it. But what about brake fluid? It is known that the brake system is one of the most important elements that determine the safety of road travelers, so it is obvious that its performance should be taken care of.

    Less obvious in this situation is the fact that, when talking about periodic replacement of components of this system, you should not forget about brake fluid, even if its level in the expansion tank does not raise suspicions.

    The brake fluid in the system must be in perfect condition

    Why is it so important? Brake fluid is a mixture of chemical compounds that is resistant to foaming and high temperatures. Depending on the type, its boiling point is between 205 and 260 degrees Celsius, which is the value for a so-called dry fluid.

    Why exactly “dry”? Brake fluid is hygroscopic – it absorbs water from the environment, even with a controlled opening of the expansion tank. When the water concentration in the system increases, the boiling point decreases, so we also talk about the temperature of the “wet” liquid with a water concentration limit of 3.7 percent. It is in the range of 140 to 180 degrees Celsius.

    It is believed that if the water concentration in this consumable exceeds this value, immediate replacement of the brake fluid is required, because during a trip requiring frequent braking, the fluid will begin to boil and the brake system will become almost completely unusable.

    “Dry” brake fluid is an incompressible liquid – it retains the same volume regardless of pressure. When water gets into it, it loses this vital property. When and how often is it recommended to change the brake fluid Recommendations vary – manufacturers talk about an interval between 40 and 60 thousand kilometers, but everyone agrees that replacement should take place at least every two years.

    To check whether you need to fill your brake fluid with new fluid, have the condition of the old fluid (namely, the concentration of water in the system) checked at a workshop. It can also be a clue that the time for replacement may be approaching and you need to have your brake fluid checked accordingly:

    • reduced braking performance;
    • visible dirt in the brake fluid reservoir, etc.

    Which brake fluid should I choose?

    Civilian passenger cars typically use DOT 4 brake fluids with a boiling point of 230 degrees Celsius for dry fluid and 155 degrees for wet fluid. Before replacing, it is best to read the manufacturer’s recommendations, because due to the different properties of different types of fluids, they should not be mixed.

    Sometimes manufacturers recommend using specific brands of fluids. This is largely due to issues of compatibility with the sealing materials used or the anti-corrosion agents used in them.

    Can I change the brake fluid myself?

    Of course, if you have the experience and the right tools. At the same time, it should be understood that this is a rather laborious and responsible measure – the fluid must be replaced in such a way as to prevent air from entering the system. Otherwise, the brake system will lose its effectiveness and the brake pedal will become unresponsive.

    At the same time, the price of brake fluid replacement at a professional Auto Master car repair shop is quite affordable, so it’s best to contact a specialist to avoid problems with the brake system.

    At the same time, the car mechanic will be able to assess the condition of other elements of the system and suggest whether they are suitable for further operation. As a result, you will be sure that the action was performed correctly and that the braking system in our car is as effective as the day the car left the factory.

    Changing brake fluid with ABS – features

    New cars have a number of electronic solutions that make it difficult or even impossible to change the brake fluid yourself. The ABS system requires the use of equipment that sucks out the used fluid under pressure.

    It is often necessary to use the diagnostic computer to open the valves in the ABS/ESP hydraulic system. Almost every modern solution causes difficulties with “home” work on the braking system – for example, the electric parking brake.

    For these reasons, it is advisable to have the brake fluid changed at a trusted and well-equipped Auto Master service center, where the specialists use modern equipment and techniques (vacuum exchange, for example).

    Changing the brake fluid Kyiv under pressure always eliminates the risk of residual old fluid in the system and also guarantees good ventilation. The residual waste fluid naturally lowers the boiling point of the new fluid.

    I contacted them because the brake pedal was getting a little "soft." The technicians quickly drained the old fluid, filled it with new fluid, and checked the system. After that, braking became clear and reliable.

    Машина трохи «провалювала» педаль гальма на холодну. Приїхав на заміну рідини, майстри показали стан старої, пояснили процес і перевірили результат. Тепер гальмування рівне та безпечне.
