What is and why is a steering rack needed in a car

Steering rack is the colloquial name for the rack steering mechanism. This mechanism is responsible for transmitting the rotational movement of the steering wheel into a corresponding change in the position of the steered wheels of the car.

The principle of operation of the steering rack as part of the steering control is not complicated and is based on connecting the steering column shaft to the rack using the appropriate gears.

Due to their high efficiency, reliability and effectiveness in converting rotational motion into translational motion, mechanical and electric steering racks are very often used by designers in many modern cars.

It is easy to conclude that the steering rack and its main elements (steering rods and steering tips) are one of the most important elements of the steering system, as well as the entire car. The accuracy and reliability of driving depend on the effective operation of the rack. The steering mechanism is a consumable element, which means that over time and the number of kilometers traveled, it can wear out.

Steering rack service life

The design of the steering rack in modern cars is so sophisticated and thought out that the average service life of such an element can be from 200 to 400 thousand kilometers. Much also depends on whether the rack is properly maintained and inspected, as well as in what conditions it will operate. Durability can be affected by many different factors, including external factors.

The way the steering mechanism is designed, its location and connection to the car’s wheels mean that this unit as a whole and the steering rack in particular are constantly subjected to forces that lead to excessive wear.

The problem can be exacerbated even more, since many manufacturers of inexpensive cars often do not pay special attention and do not adapt the rack gears installed at the factory to the conditions of further use.

As a result, operating the car in difficult conditions with overloading on uneven roads leads to premature wear of the steering mechanism and steering rack. In fact, this means that in some situations, restoration of the steering rack or its repair with possible complete replacement may be required after 20-30 thousand km.

Why you may need steering rack repair

Among the most common reasons for steering rack failure are the following:

• • overloads resulting from wheel impacts on road irregularities and obstacles (potholes, curbs, etc.);
  • using large rims with low-profile tires (this combination reduces the level of shock absorption transmitted to the suspension and steering).

The described phenomena lead to common malfunctions, the main signs of which are backlash in the transmission, which is felt as a “beat” on the steering wheel, as well as characteristic knocks when turning the steering wheel or when driving on uneven terrain.

Very often this is associated with a significant deterioration in the quality of driving the car. The car reacts significantly worse to steering wheel movement, steering becomes less precise, and you get the impression that the car stops obeying you. In some cases, fluid leaks from the power steering also indicate problems with the steering mechanism.
