What problems does cooling-system diagnostics reveal

    1. Visually noticeable leaks and cracks in the expansion tank

    2. Oil traces on the hoses are also a bad sign

    3. Damaged hoses and compromised joint sealing—all this leads to coolant leakage

What the engine cooling system consists of

What the engine cooling system consists of

1 Cooling jackets of the engine block and cylinder head,

    2 Radiator and its fan,

3 Temperature sensors (thermostat, thermal switch),

    4 Coolant pump,

    5 Expansion tank,

    6 Connecting hoses,

7 Air-bleed valve (if used in the particular design),

    8 Cabin-heater radiator,

9 A specified amount of coolant,

10 Other components whose presence depends on the vehicle’s configuration.

Cooling-system diagnostics are performed to ensure your car’s engine does not suddenly overheat and seize.

At our modern Auto Master service station we deliver cooling-system diagnostics quickly, reliably, and with a quality guarantee.

Modern vehicles are complex organisms whose systems are inter-related. Keeping the engine at its optimal operating temperature is crucial. A faulty radiator or other component can disrupt engine performance. In the simplest case the engine will not reach the required temperature; at worst it will overheat and fail completely. Cooling-system diagnostics help prevent this.

What problems does cooling-system diagnostics reveal

Determining faults “by eye” is difficult. At our service station we use instruments that check joint sealing, maintain the required pressure, and assess the condition of the thermostat and water pump.

    • Visually noticeable leaks and cracks in the expansion tank
    • Oil traces on the hoses are also a bad sign
    • Damaged hoses and compromised joint sealing—all this leads to coolant leakage

The most common problem is exceeding the temperature limit, yet many other causes and faults are possible. Comprehensive diagnostics include:

      • Hose integrity.
      • Radiators.
      • Fans.
      • Coolant quality.

Checking every component allows even minor damage to be detected so that serious problems can be avoided. You can book cooling-system diagnostics on Kyiv’s left bank through the VAG Master website.

If the coolant level is low, it cannot perform its task properly. A likely cause is a clogged radiator due to dirt or old, poor-quality antifreeze. Don’t forget to change your coolant periodically!

Cooling-system diagnostics in Kyiv are designed to identify hidden faults, including:

    • thermostat sticking;
    • cooling-fan malfunction;
    • water-pump failure

Each of these units is tested on special equipment so repairs or replacements can be done in time. The cost of units and their repair is charged additionally.

In practice the entire system must be inspected for defects or wear, not just individual elements. Bear in mind that modern cars often have very limited under-bonnet space.

This means cooling-system hoses may have bends, multiple connections, and differ in size and shape. Although hose life is long, even high-quality hoses wear out over time.

How we perform cooling-system diagnostics at the modern Auto Master service station

    1. First, we check the level and condition of the coolant in the expansion tank. The level should be between the “min” and “max” marks with the engine warm. On a cold engine, a level at “min” is acceptable because it will rise as the coolant heats and expands.
    2. Cloudiness or impurities usually indicate the antifreeze needs changing. Coolants are generally rated for 2–3 years of service, after which their properties degrade.
    3. If the coolant level still drops quickly after topping up, we check the cooling system for leaks. All joints are inspected—coolant typically leaks from:
    4. After locating the leak, the relevant hoses are replaced, the radiator repaired, the pump, expansion tank or its cap, thermostat or thermostat housing replaced, etc.
    5. The engine’s thermal regime may still be disturbed, so the engine can overheat or fail to reach operating temperature.
    1. The thermostat may function but stick. After warming to its set temperature it opens to let coolant flow from the small to the large circuit, yet not fully. Large-circuit hoses heat up, but the engine can still overheat because coolant cannot circulate through the entire circuit.

The main task of the cooling system
is to bring the engine quickly to operating temperature,
then maintain that temperature and efficiently
dissipate excess heat into the atmosphere.

The engine must not stay too cold,
because an under-heated engine under load wears faster,
while an excessively hot engine can seize. Maintaining a precise operating temperature ensures clearances between parts are optimal after heating, fuel burns fully in the cylinders, and exhaust toxicity is reduced. The normal coolant temperature is about 85–90 °C.

The car was a little "warm" on the track, I decided to check the cooling system. The craftsmen showed me the old parts, explained the possible risks and checked the operation. Now everything works smoothly and without overheating.
