Why do brakes wear less on an electric vehicle? The main reason is not the special composition of the brake pads, but the fact that the electric motor takes over part of the work during deceleration. In regenerative braking mode, it switches to generator operation, creates resistance to wheel rotation, and simultaneously returns part of the kinetic energy to the battery.
Because of this, the friction mechanisms are used less frequently. The driver can reduce speed using the accelerator pedal or by lightly pressing the brake pedal, while the electronics distribute the required deceleration between regenerative braking and the conventional braking system. The more often the vehicle slows down without heavy pedal pressure, the less work is required from the brake pads.
During normal acceleration, the electric motor uses electrical energy to move the vehicle. When the vehicle slows down, the direction of energy flow changes: the electric machine operates as a generator, and its resistance helps reduce speed. The generated electricity is sent back to the traction battery.
The mechanical brakes do not disappear during this process. They remain necessary for heavy deceleration, complete stops, and situations where regenerative braking is insufficient. Its effectiveness also depends on the battery charge level, temperature, and driving mode.
That is why the way an electric vehicle is used has a strong effect on the load placed on friction components. City driving with frequent deceleration often provides many opportunities to recover braking energy.
A brake pad wears during contact with the disc and the conversion of kinetic energy into heat. When a significant portion of deceleration is provided by the electric motor operating as a generator, there are fewer such contacts. Less friction means slower consumption of the friction material.
It is impossible to state how long brake pads on an electric vehicle will last with a single figure. Service life depends on the vehicle’s weight, driving style, routes, climate, load, and regenerative braking settings. Under favorable conditions, the difference compared with a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine can be very noticeable, and brake pad life can increase several times.
It is not only the friction material that lasts longer. The discs also heat up less frequently due to friction braking. However, this does not mean that an electric vehicle’s brake system can be ignored for years.
In a conventional vehicle, regular braking cleans the working surface of the disc from some moisture and surface deposits. In an electric vehicle, the intensity of this contact can be significantly lower. This creates a paradox: the components may experience very little physical wear, but their performance can deteriorate due to prolonged periods of inactivity.
The main causes of corrosion on electric vehicle brake discs are associated with a combination of moisture, dirt, road salt, and infrequent use of the mechanical brakes. The problem becomes especially noticeable after a long period of parking or during a cold, wet season.

Another issue is associated with the moving components of the brake caliper. When the mechanism is rarely subjected to load, moisture and dirt can accumulate in accessible areas, while the movement of the components may gradually deteriorate. This creates a risk of the brake caliper seizing on an electric vehicle.
The specifics of servicing electric vehicle brakes mean that a large amount of remaining friction material does not always indicate that the mechanism is in excellent working condition. During a service inspection, technicians assess more than just pad thickness.

Less frequent use of the mechanical components does not eliminate their function. In a critical situation, the braking mechanism must operate without delay and predictably. That is why periodic inspection is just as important here as it is on a gasoline or diesel vehicle.
Relying entirely on regenerative braking in everyday use is not the best approach. From time to time, it is advisable to perform several controlled braking operations using the mechanical braking system, of course, in a safe location and without sudden maneuvers. This allows the working surfaces of the discs and pads to receive actual mechanical load.
This advice is particularly relevant after a long period of parking, during periods of high humidity, or when noticeable deposits have appeared on the discs. The point is not aggressive braking, but ordinary deceleration using the brake pedal under appropriate road conditions.
Regenerative braking gives electric vehicles an important advantage: the mechanical brakes work less, while part of the energy from deceleration is returned to the battery. But reduced wear does not mean zero maintenance. For an electric vehicle owner, the approach to monitoring the brakes should be different: pay attention not only to pad thickness, but also to disc corrosion, caliper mobility, and the readiness of the entire system for intensive braking.
