LPG Tank Inspection: Service Life and Safe Operation
An LPG tank operates under pressure, so it has a limited service life and requires periodic inspection. Refueling does not confirm the strength of the tank body or the proper condition of its fittings. Over the years, moisture, road chemicals, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical loads affect the metal.
Checking an LPG tank and its service life begins with the manufacturer’s markings. The body contains the manufacturing date and other identification data. These details are compared with the documentation and records of previous technical procedures.
For automotive liquefied gas tanks, Ukrainian regulations provide for a technical inspection and hydrostatic test every two years. This is not the maximum service life of the tank itself: the permitted period of use is established for each specific product.
Why a Pressure Test Cannot Be Replaced by Refueling
During refueling, gas enters the tank through the standard fittings. Even if the procedure is completed without any problems, it does not show whether the metal has retained the required strength.
A pressure test, or hydrostatic test, is carried out according to an established procedure at a specified pressure. This checks the tank’s ability to withstand the load. At the same time, its suitability for further operation is assessed.
How often an LPG tank should undergo pressure testing depends on its type and the applicable requirements. For automotive LPG tanks in Ukraine, a two-year interval is established. During the inspection, the fittings, connections, and tank safety valve are also checked.
What Defects Are Looked for on the Tank Body
Inspecting an LPG tank for corrosion is especially important in areas where water, dirt, and road chemicals can accumulate. The inspection checks not only for rust, but also the nature and severity of the metal damage.
The following are reasons for a more detailed assessment:
- deep areas of corrosion, pitting, and swelling;
- dents, cracks, tears, or signs of impact;
- damage around mounting points;
- signs of leakage around fittings and connections;
- significant deterioration of the protective coating.
Surface rust and deep corrosion have different levels of risk. The affected area and its impact on the thickness of the metal wall are important, so the suitability of the tank cannot be determined solely by its appearance.
The installation method also matters. A toroidal tank installed in the spare-wheel well and a cylindrical tank mounted underneath the vehicle operate in different conditions. In the latter case, the tank body is exposed more heavily to water, dirt, and road chemicals.
Why an Expired LPG Tank Is Dangerous
How long an LPG tank lasts depends on the characteristics of the specific product, its markings, and the manufacturer’s documentation. Periodic inspection has a different purpose: to confirm that the tank remains suitable for further operation.
If the required technical inspection period has expired, there is no longer valid confirmation of the tank’s suitability. Filling such a tank with gas, as well as filling a product with a damaged body, is not permitted.
The consequences of using an expired LPG tank are primarily associated with the risk of missing dangerous changes. Over time, corrosion, deformation, or fitting failures may develop without becoming apparent during normal driving.
The most dangerous scenario is loss of gas tightness. A liquefied gas leak creates a risk of ignition. The smell of gas, severe corrosion, or mechanical damage to the tank body are reasons to stop using the equipment until it has been inspected. Removing rust and repainting the affected area do not restore the strength of the metal.
How to Check the Manufacturing Date and Avoid Missing the Next Inspection
The manufacturing date of the tank is indicated in the manufacturer’s markings. The markings may also include the serial number, capacity, working pressure, and other specifications. The information on the tank body should be compared with the LPG system documentation. If the markings have worn off or have been damaged by corrosion, the date should not be determined based on assumptions.
For inspection purposes, check:
- the manufacturing date and product number;
- the type and manufacturer’s information;
- the date of the previous technical inspection;
- the date of the next required test;
- whether the markings correspond to the documentation.
The question of whether a gas equipment inspection is mandatory should not be confused with the vehicle’s general technical inspection. For a tank that operates under pressure, separate procedures and inspection intervals apply.
An LPG tank is not designed for indefinite use. Relying only on the absence of a gas smell or normal refueling is not enough. The markings, timely pressure testing, integrity of the tank body, and proper condition of the fittings provide significantly more information about the safety of the equipment than its appearance alone.
