“Just top up the washer fluid, charge the battery, and drive” is one of the most common myths about electric vehicles. While the absence of an internal combustion engine eliminates the need to replace engine oil, spark plugs, or drive belts, it does not eliminate scheduled maintenance. An electric vehicle maintenance schedule is focused on completely different components, including the battery cooling system, reduction gearbox, braking system, and high-voltage equipment. The condition of these systems has the greatest impact on the reliability and service life of an electric vehicle.

Although electric vehicles do not have a conventional multi-speed transmission, they are equipped with a reduction gearbox. It transfers torque from the electric motor to the wheels and, in some models, operates at speeds of up to 15,000 to 20,000 RPM. Under these conditions, the gearbox lubricant not only reduces friction but also dissipates heat and protects gears and bearings from premature wear.
During normal operation, microscopic metal particles gradually accumulate in the lubricant. If too many particles build up, they begin acting as an abrasive, accelerating wear of internal components. That is why reduction gearbox oil replacement is included in the maintenance schedule of some manufacturers or recommended after evaluating the lubricant’s condition according to the requirements of a specific vehicle model.
The most expensive component of a modern electric vehicle is its high-voltage lithium-ion battery, whose lifespan depends directly on temperature control. During fast charging, the battery generates significant heat, while in winter the thermal management system maintains an optimal operating temperature to preserve charging speed and performance. This process is managed by the inverter, the battery thermal management system, and the cooling circuit.
Many electric vehicles use dielectric coolant or another specially formulated cooling fluid. Over time, its performance gradually deteriorates, making periodic inspection and replacement necessary according to the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations. Fresh coolant helps maintain efficient battery cooling and slows the natural aging process of the battery pack.
Thanks to regenerative braking, much of the vehicle’s deceleration occurs without heavy use of the brake pads and brake discs. As a result, these components often last significantly longer than those found in vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
However, this advantage also creates another maintenance concern. Because the mechanical brakes are used less frequently, brake calipers and guide pins become more susceptible to corrosion and sticking. During scheduled maintenance, technicians typically inspect:
This preventive inspection helps avoid uneven braking performance and costly brake system repairs.
Scheduled electric vehicle maintenance also includes checking:
A comprehensive inspection makes it possible to identify potential problems before warning messages appear on the dashboard.
Electric vehicles certainly have fewer consumable parts than conventional vehicles, but they are not maintenance-free. Regular electric vehicle servicing in Kyiv helps keep the battery, drivetrain, cooling systems, and high-voltage components operating reliably. The cost of electric vehicle service depends on the actual condition of the vehicle because the required maintenance procedures are determined after a complete diagnostic inspection.
Scheduled maintenance is primarily an investment in protecting the most expensive components of an electric vehicle. Regular inspections help maintain the efficiency of all major systems, extend the service life of the battery and drivetrain, and significantly reduce the risk of expensive repairs in the future.
