LPG System Maintenance Before the Season: What to Check to Avoid Power Loss
Fuel savings are only worthwhile when the LPG system is operating properly. As cold or hot weather arrives, the evaporation conditions of propane butane change, increasing the load on individual components of the system. If the reducer, injectors, or filters already show signs of wear or contamination, the engine may run unevenly, lose power, or respond slowly when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Before the start of a new season, many drivers wonder what is included in 4th generation LPG system maintenance, since timely servicing helps prevent expensive repairs and keeps the gas system operating reliably.
Power Loss During Acceleration on LPG: The Main Causes
One of the most common causes of reduced engine performance is clogged filters. The liquid phase filter traps mechanical contaminants, while the vapor phase filter with a sediment trap collects oily condensate and heavy gas fractions. As their flow capacity decreases, the engine cannot receive enough fuel under heavy load. This is when power loss during acceleration on LPG typically occurs, most often due to contamination within the system.
Another critical component is the LPG reducer. Over time, the reducer diaphragm gradually loses its elasticity because of natural aging and temperature fluctuations. During rapid acceleration, the reducer can no longer maintain stable gas pressure, causing the air fuel mixture to become lean and reducing engine performance. Additional symptoms may include jerking under load or the system automatically switching back to gasoline. In this situation, gas pressure should be checked, and the LPG reducer should be adjusted if necessary.
Gas injectors are equally important. When contaminated, they may open more slowly or deliver different amounts of fuel to individual cylinders. If diagnostic testing confirms this issue, the injectors should be cleaned to restore even fuel delivery and stable engine operation.
What Should Be Checked Before the Season Begins?
Seasonal LPG maintenance should include:
- replacement of the liquid phase filter;
- replacement of the vapor phase filter with a sediment trap;
- inspection of the gas line for leaks;
- calibration and diagnostics of the electronic control unit;
- checking reducer pressure;
- inspection of the gas injectors and cleaning them if necessary.
Replacing the filters alone is not enough. Even new filter elements cannot compensate for incorrect reducer pressure or malfunctioning injectors. Only a comprehensive inspection can confirm that every component of the system is working correctly.
Many drivers also ask how often LPG filters should be replaced. The primary guideline should always be the equipment manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. However, the condition of the filters should ideally be checked during every scheduled service, especially if the vehicle is mainly driven in city traffic or regularly refueled at different gas stations.
Why Computer Diagnostics Are Necessary
After the mechanical components have been inspected, electronic diagnostics should be performed. The technician analyzes the gas fuel map, injection timing, short term fuel trims, and long term fuel trims. This makes it possible to determine whether the engine is operating with a lean or rich fuel mixture and adjust the system settings if necessary. After replacing the filters, cleaning the injectors, or adjusting the reducer, recalibration synchronizes the LPG control unit with the gasoline engine control module and confirms accurate fuel metering under all engine operating conditions.
Why You Should Never Ignore the Check Engine Light
If the Check Engine warning light appears only while driving on LPG, diagnostics should not be postponed. Prolonged engine operation with a lean fuel mixture increases exhaust valve temperatures and significantly raises the risk of premature valve damage.
The cost of LPG system maintenance in Kyiv depends on the condition of the system, the type of installed equipment, and the amount of work required. However, scheduled maintenance is always far less expensive than repairing the cylinder head or replacing damaged valves. Regular LPG system servicing helps maintain stable engine performance, prevents lean mixture operation, and avoids failures whose repair costs can be many times higher than the cost of timely preventive maintenance.
